Kelly McGuigan, M.D., MDS President with Larry Hogan, Governor of Maryland at a press conference during the 2018 Maryland Dermatologic Society Skin Cancer Screening Day in Annapolis. During the 2019 legislative session, the Society helped pass a bill prohibiting those under the age of 18 from using indoor tanning devices after a difficult multi-year fight against a strong industry lobby. Gov. Hogan, a cancer survivor himself, singed the bill into law after the end of the 2019 session. The ban will reduce the risk of skin cancer, the most common cancer there is, and save lives. The Maryland State Health Department estimates over 47,000 children under the age of 18 use indoor tanning devices annually.
